Writer Testing
Writing tests built from real briefs and marked against set criteria, so employers can compare candidates and writers get an honest score.
Writing is hired on the strength of samples, and samples are the weakest evidence available. They are chosen by the candidate, they may have been edited by someone else, and they say nothing about how the person performs on a brief they did not pick.
Writer Testing is being built to give employers something better and to give writers a fairer hearing. A test here is a piece of real work: a brief, a source or two, a length, an audience, and a deadline that resembles the one the job will impose. It is marked against criteria written down in advance, so results can be compared and explained.
The skills being looked for are separable and observable. Whether the brief was understood. Whether the material was used accurately. Whether the structure serves the reader. Whether the voice fits the audience. Whether the piece was cut and checked before it was handed in.
For writers, the same tests work as practice with an honest score attached, which is more useful than another round of advice.
