The Last Hypothesis
Why is there anything at all? The candidate answers set out fairly, with the science explained accurately.
There is a question underneath all the others, and it does not go away when the physics is finished: why there is anything at all.
The Last Hypothesis is being built as a place to take that question seriously without pretending it has been settled. Cosmology has given us an extraordinarily detailed account of what happened and in what order. It has not given an account of why there is a universe for any of it to happen in, and the honest position is that nobody has one.
What can be done is to set out the candidate answers properly and see what each actually costs. A universe that began, a universe that did not, a multiverse, a brute fact that requires no explanation, a necessary being, a limit on what explanation can mean. Each has consequences, and most of the public argument between them is conducted without anyone stating theirs.
The intention here is careful rather than confident: to explain the science accurately, to represent each position as its own best advocates would, and to be clear about the difference between what is known, what is inferred, and what is preferred.
