Proofreading tests built from real passages seeded with real errors, scored on what was caught, missed and wrongly changed.
Proofreading is one of the few skills where competence can be measured almost exactly. Either the errors were found or they were not.
Proofreader Tests is being built on that fact. A test here is a real passage seeded with the kinds of mistakes that occur in real documents: transpositions, agreement failures, wrong homophones, inconsistent treatment of numbers and dates, punctuation that changes the meaning, and the errors that survive a spelling checker precisely because every word in them is a word.
Scoring is straightforward. How many were caught, how many were missed, and how many corrections were introduced that were not errors at all, which is the failing that separates a careful proofreader from an enthusiastic one.
The tests are meant for two groups. Employers and agencies who need to compare candidates on the same basis rather than on a CV. And proofreaders who want an honest measure of where they stand and what to practise.
